Science Picnic “Feriowisko” in Gniewino
On Saturday, 15 February, we had the pleasure of participating in the Science Picnic “Feriowisko” in Gniewino – an event combining science, education and fun for the whole family. As part of the educational picnic organised by the Gniewino Community Centre for Tourism and Sports and the Polish Nuclear Power Plant, our Foundation ran an educational stand dedicated to nuclear energy, ionising radiation and radiological protection.
“Atomlab” in action – how do reactors work and what is radiation?
Our stand, manned by Jacek Frost, Łukasz Koszuk and Anna Przybyszewska, attracted both the youngest explorers and adults curious about the world of science. Thanks to exhibits from the mobile exhibition ‘Atomlab’, everyone could see how a nuclear reactor works and the importance of nuclear energy in the energy sector. At our stand you could see:
- a mock-up of a nuclear power plant – showing how a modern nuclear power plant looks and works,
- a fuel cassette – showing what the fuel in a nuclear power station looks like,
- a mock-up radioactive waste cask – explaining how to store radioactive waste safely,
- demonstrations of ionising radiation detection – using Geiger counters and other instruments to measure ionising radiation,
- energy-related demonstrations – explaining the phenomena of energy conversion, the efficiency of energy systems and the role of renewable energy sources,
- giant jigsaw puzzles – an interactive attraction for children to play at building a nuclear power station!
Education and fun
Our demonstrations attracted great interest – children enthusiastically completed puzzles, parents tested ionising radiation meters and everyone was able to learn more about the future of energy in Poland. During the event, we answered questions about reactor safety, waste disposal and the role of nuclear energy in the energy transition.
The Science Feriowisko in Gniewino is an example of a well-organised event that combines education with an engaging form of knowledge presentation. We would like to thank the Polish Nuclear Power Plants for the invitation to participate and for the opportunity to bring the subject of nuclear energy closer to the residents of the region. We are sure this will not be the last event of this type – see you at the next editions!
