“Meetings with Atomic Energy” also in Krakow!
on 17 December we inaugurated the “Meetings with Atomic Energy” programme in Kraków! This is the second city, after Wejherowo, where didactic classes for middle and high school students on radioactivity and nuclear energy will be held periodically. The first two meetings were held at the General Władysław Anders Middle School No. 42 and the St Stanisław Kostka Jesuit Middle School. The classes were conducted by Łukasz Koszuk in cooperation with Anna Przybyszewska and Janusz Zyśek.
The classes were conducted according to a didactic programme specially prepared at our Foundation, entitled “Tame the Atom”. “tamed Atom”, which deals with issues relating to electricity, ionising radiation and the safety of nuclear power plants. It provides not only an interesting lecture illustrated with demonstrations, but also interaction with students – competitions or exercises. Among other things, the students have the opportunity to assess their effective dose from natural and artificial ionising radiation, which depends on our lifestyle and place of residence, or to examine hypothetical locations for a nuclear power plant, around the imaginary town of Franklin – one has to assess the indicated locations in terms of several criteria, which are taken into account in the initial selection of a site for the construction of a nuclear power plant.
In May and June this year, we conducted a pilot series of “Meetings with Atomic Energy in Wejherowo”. We started the ‘Meetings with Atomic Energy’ programme already in the first year of our Foundation’s operation, and this time our activity was addressed to junior and senior high school students from Pomerania, from the vicinity of the planned construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland. It turned out that the interest of the schools was very high, despite the approaching holidays and the end of classes. We received 12 school groups, with a total of around 350 students and teachers visiting us! This is why we want to expand the project to other cities.
