The Atomic Bus – Mobile Laboratory is one of the most important and largest projects carried out by the entire FORUM ATOMOWE Foundation Team between 2010 and 2023.

Atomowy Autobus

The aim of the project was to reach out to local communities and present in an accessible way issues related to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, in the context of the nuclear power plant construction programme being implemented in Poland. The FORUM ATOMOWE Foundation carried out seven editions of the project: in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, two in 2015 and 2023. All of them were met with great interest and active participation of participants. Details of each edition can be found below

“Atomic Bus – Mobile Laboratory” is a key project of the FORUM ATOMOWE Foundation, which is a nationwide education and information campaign implemented in the form of a roadshow. As part of it, a group of about 15 volunteers visits primary schools, secondary schools and universities, as well as institutions such as science and technology parks.

The bus acts as a mobile information centre, equipped with modern audiovisual equipment, educational models, demonstration devices and a thematic exhibition. During the events, the Foundation’s team talks to participants, providing free of charge reliable and up-to-date knowledge on radioactivity, radiological protection, reactor technologies, safety systems and environmental and economic aspects of the construction of nuclear power plants in Poland.

Lectures and seminars aimed at schoolchildren, as well as spectacular demonstrations and experiments in nuclear physics and radiology are also an integral part of the project. With specially prepared models and mock-ups, participants can see how a typical nuclear power plant operates.

In 2023, the Atomic Bus – Mobile Laboratory project was awarded the international PIME Award for Communication Excellence by the European Nuclear Society for the best information campaigns on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The ATOM FORUM Foundation won first place in the final of the competition, beating renowned organisations from the UK, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates and Germany. The award confirms the high level of the project’s content and the professionalism of the volunteer team.

The Foundation also attaches great importance to cooperation with local media and communities. Internet communication tools are used for each edition, and an ongoing blog reports on the successive stages of the Atomic Bus route. The project also has a research function – it allows to learn about local conditions and social attitudes towards nuclear energy.
