Teaching activities at the Child Health Centre
On 20 April, the Volunteer Team of our Foundation, at the invitation of Ms Monika Wójtowicz, organised a special workshop on ionising radiation at the Ewa Szelburg – Zarembina School Complex No. 78 in the “Pomnik – Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka” Institute. Around 25 pupils took part in the workshop.
What we cannot see and feel with our senses causes us the greatest fear. The effects of ionising radiation on living organisms, for example, can only be observed when certain characteristic values are exceeded. Thanks to research into the properties of what is not visible to the naked eye, methods have been developed for the safe use of radioactive sources and devices that produce ionising radiation. The aim of the workshop was to familiarise participants with basic nuclear physics: the nature of radioactivity, the properties of ionising radiation (electromagnetic and corpuscular) and radiological protection. The classes were led by: Krzysztof Ciupek, Łukasz Koszuk and Monika Szymańska.
