Volunteers at the 4th School on Nuclear Power

Implementation of the Polish Nuclear Power Programme involves representatives of many authorities and institutions at every stage – the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) is already planned for Poland in the second half of 2011. To meet the demand for specialised and hard-to-reach knowledge on nuclear safety and radiological protection at nuclear facilities, the POLATOM Institute of Atomic Energy held a special edition of the School on Nuclear Power on 21-23 March. The School was attended by 37 participants – representatives of such institutions as the Office of Technical Inspection, PGE Energia Jądrowa S.A., PGE EJ1 Sp. z o.o., the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, Energoprojekt Warsaw, the General Directorate for Environmental Protection, Łódź University of Technology, the Central Institute for Labour Protection, the Podlasie Voivodeship Office, the Institute of Chemistry and Nuclear Technology, and a group of volunteers from the ATOM FORUM Foundation.

As part of the three-day School, 7 lectures were planned, covering the most important issues related to nuclear power, including
– Impact of nuclear power plants during normal operation on human and environmental health
– Physical protection of nuclear facilities
– Fundamentals of nuclear power safety and emergency management
– Spent fuel storage and reprocessing

An essential part of the School was two days of workshops and visits to the Institute’s research laboratories and the Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility.
