Pilot series of “Meetings with Atomic Energy in Wejherowo”

On 25 June we concluded the pilot series of “Meetings with Atomic Energy in Wejherowo”, which we implemented in partnership with the Kashubian-Pomeranian University of Science and Technology. We started the ‘Meetings with Atomic Energy’ programme already in the first year of our Foundation’s operation, and this time our action was aimed at junior and senior high school students from Pomerania, from the vicinity of the planned construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland.

The classes were conducted according to a specially prepared didactic programme at our Foundation entitled. “tamed Atom”, which dealt with issues relating to electricity, ionising radiation and the safety of nuclear power plants. It provides not only an interesting lecture illustrated with demonstrations, but also interaction with students – competitions or exercises. The students had the opportunity, among other things, to assess their effective dose from natural and artificial ionising radiation, which depends on our lifestyle and place of residence, or to examine hypothetical locations for a nuclear power plant, around the imaginary town of Franklin – they had to assess the indicated locations in terms of several criteria that are taken into account in the initial selection of a site for a nuclear power plant. We are pleased that everyone actively participated in our activities, which were led by Łukasz Koszuk and Jacek Frost.

The ATOMIC FORUM Foundation is made up of a team of young, active and ambitious people, specialists in their fields, including nuclear physics, radiological protection, energy, nuclear power, environmental protection, information technology. In our experience, the most effective method of imparting knowledge to young people is precisely direct contact with young specialists who, using modern and interactive teaching methods, are able to convey information about nuclear science and radiation science in an attractive way. And perhaps some of them will be inspired and choose technical or science subjects at a later stage of their educational path.

The cooperation with the Kashubian-Pomeranian University was very successful, so we can already assure you that we will continue our joint project from October.
